Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition

Preparing students to write confidently and effectively in professional and public situations

The Department of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition offers students a wide-range of opportunities for exploring how writing works in professional and public settings. Courses in our programs create the atmosphere in which students can acquire rhetorical knowledge and strategies to write purposefully, incisively and ethically. Students and faculty in the program read closely and critically, explore rhetorical situations and cultural contexts, engage in inquiry, and study the elements of well reasoned, persuasive discourse.

Students hone skills in writing purposefully, imaginatively, and persuasively in, across, and beyond their college courses, providing excellent preparation for students whether they are pursuing graduate school, law school, or want a significant edge in the professional world or within their communities.

The faculty members of Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition are dedicated to offering strong academic support to every student in every class. No matter your educational or personal background or your prior experiences with writing, as a 51ÂÜÀòstudent you should find your writing teachers welcoming, accessible, and helpful. We value language diversity and recognize that there is not just one English language and one right way to write and speak it. We want to help you develop the confidence and competence necessary to write effectively for school, for work, and for life beyond, with an understanding that who you are can and should impact how and why you write. As teachers we emphasize collaboration, personalized feedback, and the ability to research and write about topics where your interests intersect with your evolving understanding of the public good.
