Department of English

Providing students with the development, critical skills and experiential learning opportunities to prepare for fulfilling careers

The Department of English is committed to providing students with a dynamic, hands-on education that focuses on project-based learning experiences that prepare students for a wide variety of professional careers in areas including publishing, journalism, public relations, advocacy, and marketing. Nationally recognized authors and writers make up our faculty and lead students in the study of literary forms and the development of critical analysis and skills, creativity, and cultural literacy. The English Department faculty keep their doors open and strongly believe in individual development and advisement.

Experiential learning opportunities include the 51ÂÜÀò-sponsored literary magazine Mount Hope, fellowships in the 51ÂÜÀò Writing Center, presentations at renowned national conferences, internships, projects with the Community Partnerships Center, and the SAR Advocacy "living course", an international advocacy effort that has led to the release of writers imprisoned and persecuted for their work.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies peers beneath the surface of the pop culture you consume, the music you listen to, the clothes you buy, the foods you eat, the places you visit, the speeches you hear, the things you read, and the art you see. We invite you to examine impact of identity on American culture.
