Dr. Julie Kiernan Coon is a Professor of Criminal Justice in the School of Justice Studies and has been at 51蹤獲 since 2007. She earned her B.A. in Economics from the State University of New York at Albany, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Coon worked as a research assistant mapping crime for the Forest Park Police Department in Ohio and was a ride along observer during an 18 month long project documenting activities of police officers in the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area. Dr. Coon also served as Project Director for a national study examining the role of law enforcement in schools, funded by the National Institute of Justice.

Since arriving at RWU, Dr. Coons research has focused on policing diverse communities, conducting citizen satisfaction surveys for local police departments, and surveying police and school principals about the effectiveness of school safety measures. Dr. Coons book, Security Technology in U.S. Public Schools was published by LFB Scholarly Publishing. Dr. Coons most recent article focuses on the use of situational crime prevention strategies in public high schools. In addition to book chapters, her work has been published in the Security Journal, Journal of Criminal Justice and Law, International Journal of Police Science and Management, Police Practice and Research: An International Journal, and International Criminal Justice Review. Dr. Coon currently teaches numerous courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs, including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Policing in America, Crime Prevention, Justice Studies Capstone, Criminal Justice System Overview, and a variety of special topics courses.
